STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP (1969)

Stroke Play from Scratch.

1. The Union will hold a competition to decide the Amateur Stroke Play Champion. This competition shall be open to members of clubs in the Union with Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4 and will be decided by 18 holes stroke play. 

2. Entries shall be made either on-line via the S.U.G.C. website or on the official entry form (downloadable from the website or from the office). Entry must be accompanied by the entry fee.  

3. START TIME -  It is the player's responsibility to start at the time established by the Committee. Regulation 14 ( SUGC Regulations for all competitions) applies.

4. The player returning the lowest gross score over 18 holes will be the 'Stroke Play Champion' and will receive the 'Jack Hulley Trophy' and a memento.

5. In the event of a tie for the Championship after 18 holes those competitors involved will play-off hole by hole until a winner is declared. All other places in the play-off shall be declared joint runners-up.

6. All other ties shall be decided as per Rule 10 in SUGC Regulations for all Competitions.

7. Appropriate prizes will be decided by the Executive Committee.

8. The leading 16 competitors will qualify to compete in the Sheffield Amateur Championship. In the event of any of the above being unavailable a list of reserves, in order of ascending gross scores, will be drawn up.

 (6 - 25 handicap) STABLEFORD COMPETITION (2017)

Stableford Play off Handicap. ( *changed for 2020 was Stroke Play , changed 2022, 18 to 25 category added)

1. The Union will hold an 18 hole Stableford Competition open to members of clubs in the Union, with three divisions, 5.5 to 12.4, 12.5 to 18.4, & 18.5 to 25.4 based on players Handicap Index on the day of the competition. Each division will play off the course handicap with each player receiving 95% of the course handicap.

2. Entries shall be made either on-line via the S.U.G.C. website or on the official entry form (downloadable from the website or from the office). Entry must be accompanied by the entry fee.

3. In the event that the entry is over-subscribed, a ballot will take place.

4. START TIME -  It is the player's responsibility to start at the time established by the Committee. Regulation 14 ( SUGC Regulations for all competitions) applies.

5. The player with the most stableford points over 18 holes in each division will receive the trophy.

6. In the event of a tie for each trophy after 18 holes then the results will be decided on countback.

7. All other ties shall be decided as per Rule 10 in SUGC Regulations for all Competitions.

8. Appropriate prizes will be decided by the Executive Committee.

9. The three trophies are a). 6 to 12 (Graham Needham), b). 13 to 18 (Mike Greaves), c). 19 to 25 (John Reynard) 

THE SHEFFIELD AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP (1911 to 1968 - revised 2002)

Match Play from Scratch.

1. The Union will hold a competition to decide the Sheffield Amateur Champion who will hold the Past Presidents Trophy. This competition shall be open to 16 leading competitors, or reserves, as a result of the Amateur Stroke Play Championship of the current year and will be decided by four rounds of Match Play, all of 18 holes. In the event of a tie after 18 holes play shall continue until one hole is gained by a player. 

2. Following the Stroke Play Championship a fully seeded draw will be published by the Executive Committee.

3. In the event of a player withdrawing from the draw for round one, the SUGC will attempt to call up a player from the reserve list to take the place of the player who has withdrawn. If this is not possible the first round opponent will be given a walkover into round two.

4. No additional entry fee will be payable.

5. START TIME -  It is the player's responsibility to start at the time established by the Committee. Regulation 14 ( SUGC Regulations for all competitions) applies.

6. Prizes will be awarded to the champion, the runner-up and the semi-finalists.

MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP (1986)

Stroke Play from Scratch.

1. The Union will hold a competition to decide the Mid-Amateur Champion. The competition shall be open to members of clubs in the Union who are THIRTY FIVE years of age and over on the day of the competition and whose Handicap Index shall not exceed 12.4.

2. The competition shall be decided by 18 holes Stroke Play, and will be limited to 60 entries. In the event of any entry exceeding 60, a ballot will be held to decide which of the higher handicap entries can be accepted.

3. START TIME -  It is the player's responsibility to start at the time established by the Committee. Regulation 14 ( SUGC Regulations for all competitions) applies.

4. The player returning the lowest gross score over the 18 holes will be the Mid-Amateur Champion and will receive the 'Peter Wharton' Trophy.

5. All other ties shall be decided as per Rule 10 in SUGC Regulations for all Competitions.

6. Entries shall be made either on-line via the S.U.G.C. website or on the official entry form (downloadable from the website or from the office). The entry must be accompanied by the entry fee.

7. Prizes will be awarded as decided by the Executive Committee.

THE SHEFFIELD PLATE

Sheffield Open Amateur Championship (1992)

Stroke Play from Scratch.

1. The Union will hold a competition to decide the Sheffield Open Amateur Champion. This competition shall be open to members of clubs affiliated to  a National Golf Union with a Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4 and will be decided by 36 holes of Stroke Play.

1 (a) Entrants shall complete both rounds of golf unless , unless he has notified the desk of his withdrawal on the day of the competition, or a justifiable reason is given in writing for his not doing so. The Executive Committee's decision as to whether such reason is justifiable and whether or not any sanctions shall be applied, shall be final.

2. Entries shall be made either on-line via the S.U.G.C. website or on the official entry form (downloadable from the website or from the office). The entry must be accompanied by the entry fee.

3. The competition will be limited to 60 entries. In the event of the competition being oversubscribed, the start-sheet will be formed by sorting the entries into the lowest 60 Handicap Indexes  ( at the time the competition closed ). The remaining players will form a reserve list keeping the same order. 

4. START TIME -  It is the player's responsibility to start at the time established by the Committee. Regulation 14 ( SUGC Regulations for all competitions) applies.

5. (a) The player returning the lowest gross score over 36 holes will be the 'Sheffield Open Amateur Champion' and will receive the 'Sheffield Plate' and a                          memento.

    (b) The best 18 hole gross score receives the 'Bolton Salver'.

6. In the event of a tie for the Championship after 36 holes those competitors involved will play off hole by hole until a winner is declared. All other places in the play off shall be declared joint runners up.

7. All other ties shall be decided as per Rule 10 in SUGC Regulations for all Competitions.

8. Prizes will be decided by the Executive Committee.

THE SHEFFIELD OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP (1949)

Stroke Play from Scratch.

1. The Union will hold a competition consisting of 18 holes stroke play to decide the Sheffield Open Champion.

2. The competition shall be open to both Amateurs and Professionals (including Lady Professionals) all of whom shall be attached to Clubs affiliated to the Union. The Handicap Index for Amateurs shall not exceed 8.4 and the competition will be limited to 60 entrants divided as equally as possible between amateurs and professionals.

3. Entries shall be made either on-line via the S.U.G.C. website (Amateurs only as CDH is needed, professionals enter via the office ) or on the official entry form (downloadable from the website or from the office). The entry must be accompanied by the entry fee.

4. The club professional of all clubs in the Union will be invited by the Union to enter.

5. START TIME -  It is the player's responsibility to start at the time established by the Committee. Regulation 14 ( SUGC Regulations for all competitions) applies.

6. The player returning the lowest gross score over 18 holes shall be the Open Champion. In the event of a tie for the Championship after 18 holes, those competitors involved will play off hole by hole until a winner is declared. All other players in the play off will be joint runners up.

7. All other ties shall be decided as per Rule 10 in SUGC Regulations for all Competitions.

8. If the winner of the Championship is an Amateur, he will receive the 'Hughes Cup', but if the winner is not an Amateur, the 'Hughes Cup' will be awarded to the leading Amateur after 18 holes. Ties shall be decided as per Rule 10 in Regulations for Competitions.

9. If the winner of the Championship is a Professional, he will receive the 'Lockwood Salver', but if the winner is not a Professional, the 'Lockwood Salver' will be awarded to the leading Professional after 18 holes. Ties shall be decided as per Rule 10 in SUGC Regulations for all Competitions.

 10. The Union will now award cash prizes to the professionals and amateurs.

SENIORS' AND VETERANS' CHAMPIONSHIP (2004 Revised 2009)

Stroke Play from Scratch.

1. The Union will hold a competition over 18 holes Stroke Play to decide the Seniors' Champion.

2. The competition shall be open to members of clubs in the Union who have reached the age of 55 on the day of the competition, with a Handicap Index of 24.4 or less, and shall be limited to 60 entries. In the event of an entry in excess of 60, a ballot will be held to decide which of the higher handicap entries in each age category can be accepted.

3. Entries shall be made either on-line via the S.U.G.C. website or on the official entry form (downloadable from the website or from the office). The entry must be accompanied by the entry fee.

4. START TIME -  It is the player's responsibility to start at the time established by the Committee. Regulation 14 ( SUGC Regulations for all competitions) applies.

5. The player with the lowest gross will be the Seniors Champion and will receive the Jack Robinson Trophy and a memento. The player aged 65 or over with the lowest gross score will be the Veterans Champion and will receive the Veterans Trophy and a memento.

6. Running concurrently with the Championship there will be a Stroke Play competition from Scratch and a Net Stroke Play competition for 4 age groups:

55-59 (Cat A),   60-64 (Cat B),   65-69 (Cat C) and   70 & over (Cat D).

7. All other ties shall be decided as per Rule 10 in SUGC Regulations for all Competitions.

8. The best gross score regardless of age will be the Seniors' Champion; should that be a player aged 65 or over he will also be the Veterans' Champion. The same applies to the runners up in these Championships.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS (2016)

Stroke Play from Scratch.

1 The Union will hold a competition to decide the Champion of Champions,

2. The competition shall be by invitation to The Champion of Clubs in the Union.

3. START TIME -  It is the player's responsibility to start at the time established by the Committee. Regulation 14 ( SUGC Regulations for all competitions) applies.

4. The competition will be decided over 18 holes of stroke play from scratch.

5. The player returning the lowest gross score will be the Champion of Champions and will receive the Champion of Champions Trophy and a memento.

6. In the event of a tie for the Championship, a play off will take place as soon as is reasonable after the conclusion of the 18 holes and those competitors involved will play off hole on holes to be decided by the Officer in Charge, until a winner is declared. All other players in the play off will be joint runners up. 

7. All other ties shall be decided as per Rule 10 in SUGC Regulations for all Competitions.

8. The Union will award prizes as decided by the Executive Committee.

CHARLES A LOCKWOOD TROPHY (1967)

This trophy will be awarded annually to the Amateur who returns the lowest aggregate score over the two rounds (36holes) played in the Amateur Stroke Play and The Sheffield Open Championships in the same season. In the event of a tie, countback will be taken on the individuals BEST gross score of the two rounds.

TEE-UP TROPHY (1973)

This Trophy, which was presented by Sheffield Newspapers Limited, will be awarded annually to the Sheffield Amateur Golfer who has accumulated most 'Points' in the competitions, matches and other events organised by the Union.
