A sparkling three under par round of 70 in the Sheffield Strokeplay at Silkstone on Sunday enabled Lindrick’s Ian Clarke to capture the Charles Lockwood Trophy for 2017.
The Lockwood Trophy is presented to the player with the lowest combined scores in the Sheffield Open and Sheffield Strokeplay events, and has an illustrious list of former winners, to whom Clarke was delighted to add his name.
“My initial reaction on Sunday was one of disappointment,” said Clarke. “Stefan Priest and I had tied on three-under, and we were all set to go and play off for the title when Sam Bairstow came in from that last group with a 67 to blow us all away and back to the car park.”
Clarke (above) modestly added that “Had the events been 36 holes, as they always used to be, I’m sure a more accomplished player than me would have walked away with the Lockwood Trophy. But as it is, I’m delighted to have come out on top.”
After a season full of excellent play in Seniors’ events, it is fair to suggest that he is mistaken in his assessment. Clarke has appeared regularly for Yorkshire Seniors’ title winning side this season, and has been selected for their six-man team to play in the Seniors’ County Finals at Arcot Hall next week. With another trophy nestling in his cabinet, albeit one that surprised him, he can approach the week with confidence.
