Hanson Shines in the Sun

Yet another day of punishing heat greeted a strong field of Sheffield’s most experienced campaigners to Doncaster Town Moor on Sunday for the Union’s Mid-Amateur and Seniors and Veterans’ Championships.

The man who outlasted the rest was Richard Hanson of Renishaw Park, who consistently found the narrow, fast-running fairways in an impressive display of straight hitting. Hanson described his display as “steady”, but the small targets offered up throughout the Town Moor course always reward consistency, and Hanson’s level par 69 proved good enough for a one stroke victory over Tim Brind of Abbeydale.

Brind has been in impressive form, having led Abbeydale to success in Yorkshire Division Two at Ilkely during the week. Both he and Hanson reached the 17th tee at one under par, but Brind’s run of impressively struck iron shots was unfortunately broken when his tee shot at the par three plugged in a greenside bunker. He could manage no better than a five, and Hanson’s par gave him a two-shot advantage on the final tee.

He recorded a disappointing six to finish, but it he was relieved to come out on top to record his first Mid-Amateur victory. “I’ve only recently become eligible to play in over 35 events,” he explained. “Well, only eight years ago anyway…”

Having also had a hole-in-one at Renishaw during the week, it capped a happy week’s golf for the stalwart. Also coming away satisfied with his day was Hallamshire's Nigel Wensley, whose excellent 72 saw him claim the Seniors Title. The Veterans Prize went to Bawtry's Dhanesh Heeramun with a gross score of 79
