Sheffield Unionof Golf Clubs
Result: York 12 - 24 SUGC
On a cloudy day with a threat of rain showers, possible thunder storms later in the day and a constant wind blowing across a tight but fair Fulford course this promised to be a challenging match for the visitors. As the course is pretty much 9 holes out and 9 holes back it was no advantage to either right or left handed golfers as, at some point all would be faced with a strong left to right wind with which to contend.
Sheffield did, however, enjoy the best of the early exchanges in the morning 4somes with the first two pairings on Ollie Smith, Lewis Harrison, Tom Stanley and Issac Simpson returning fine 5 & 4 and 5 & 3 victories. The next three matches were not so successful so it was left to the final pairing to return a 2 up victory to ensure that at lunch the scores were level at 6 - 6, endorsing the early prediction that this was going to be a difficult day.
The afternoon singles matches were then played with some stern resolve and a great deal of skill, making light of the difficult conditions. Out of the first six matches as a result of some magnificent ball striking and course management Sheffield won four of them with both Lewis Harrison and Tom Stanley returning exceptional 8 & 7 and 5 & 4 victories to be followed by an equally fine 7 & 6 victory for Lewis Hollingworth, it made for a much more comfortable position by mid-sfternoon.
This happy situation was consolidated by four victories in the next five matches with an unfortunate lost ball on the 16th hole practically deciding a very tight match resulting in a 2 & 1 defeat in the fifth, before the reliable Neil Stones won the final match 2 & 1 to record a fine 18 - 6 singles margin and an overall 24 - 12 victory for Sheffield.
In spite of the difficult wind, of the matches which went as far as the 17th hole, no one experienced the difficulty which Bernhard Langer encountered there and no one had to climb the tree.
