This fixture always promised to be a challenging one against a team flying high at the top of the table, and so it proved to be.
The Sheffield team was missing several of its regular players because of club championships being held on the same day, but similarly the East Riding team was also fielding four debutants. The outcome could be said to be unpredictable and so it was to be.
The morning foursomes started in blustery but fine conditions with East Riding taking an early lead when their strong opening pairing of Uzzell and Raybould recorded a fine 5 & 4 victory. Houlgate and Calvert levelled the tie with an equally fine 4 & 2 win in the second match. The closeness of the parings became evident when match 3 finished all square, but eventually the visitors finished the morning session with a 7- 5 point lead, as the East Riding teenage debutant pairing managed a 1 up victory.
The afternoon singles matches started promisingly with Sheffield gaining 7 points from the first five matches to have a 2 point advantage at this point, but as the wind strengthened it blew away the home team's advantage, only winning 3 more points from the remaining seven matches, leaving the visitors with a comfortable victory and the home team with some soul searching.
