SUGC v BRADFORD AT WORTLEY

A damp, grey, misty autumnal morning seemed a fitting end to the 2024 YIDU season at Wortley Golf Club in the final match against Bradford.  On this occasion Sheffield was able to field a stronger team than has been possible for many of the matches this season, with several players making only their third appearance of the season in order to qualify for Yorkshire team Championship next week.

This was a satisfying result with which to sign off. Sheffield achieving what, on paper, was a comfortable win, although, in reality they had to fight hard for the victory, particularly in the afternoon singles.

The morning foursomes lulled us in to a sense of security as we ran out easy 10 - 2 winners, with only one match going as far as the seventeenth green.  Concern was being expressed about the condition of the greens, however.  This was a situation of which we were aware, as, earlier in the week there was some doubt about whether or not the fixture could take place at Wortley, because of damaged sustained to the greens, a freak accident of no-one's making, contaminating the water supply with which the greens were watered.  The greens staff should be congratulated for the remedial work undertaken to enable the match to take place at all.

The afternoon single proved to be a much sterner task.  As no long putts were being holed, and a tight Wortley course where position off the tee is of greater value than a massive drive, the only out of the ordinary shot was a chip in from the back of the sixteenth green, alas by the opposition.

It was down to good solid, sensible golf that eventually saw us home.  The first five matches gave an indication of the task in hand with four of them finishing on the eighteenth green, three finishing all square. Of the remaining seven matches we suffered two heavy defeats, but despite going to either the seventeen or final greens we managed to gain points in four of those games to run out

24 - 12 winners, to end the season on a high.
